Are we alone in the universe ?

The universe is vast, filled with millions of stars and billions of planets. Yet, there is no evidence of extraterrestrial life. Aliens with far greater technologies should have been able to contact us. At least, we should have been able to observe their trace. But still, nothing. This is the Fermi paradox.

Scientists have been trying to solve the Fermi paradox for decades, proposing various solutions, such as the possibility that extraterrestrial life is rare, or that civilizations are too far apart to communicate. But the dark forest theory suggests something even more ominous.

Proposed by Chinese science fiction writer Liu Cixin, the dark forest theory suggests that the universe is a silent battlefield, in which civilizations are in a constant state of mutual destruction. It posits that any civilization that reveals itself through communication, or other means, is likely to be destroyed by a more advanced civilization, because it represents an existential threat. Thus, the lack of communication could be a result of civilizations choosing to remain hidden, out of self-preservation.
